English Language Criteria for Australian Immigration

The English language criteria for immigration in Australia vary depending on the visa category and the applicant’s circumstances. In general, the Department of Home Affairs, which is responsible for immigration in Australia, requires applicants to demonstrate a certain level of English language proficiency in order to be eligible for a visa.

For most visa categories, applicants are required to provide evidence of their English language proficiency through an internationally recognized English language test, such as the International English Language Testing System (IELTS), the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), the Pearson Test of English (PTE) or the Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE).

The minimum score required for immigration purposes may vary depending on the visa category, but generally, a score of at least 6.0 in each of the four components (reading, writing, listening, and speaking) of the IELTS test, or equivalent scores in other tests, is required.

There are some exemptions to this requirement, such as if the applicant is a passport holder of certain countries where English is an official language, if the applicant has completed at least five years of study in English, or if the applicant is over the age of 60.

What is the English Requirement for Work Visas in Australia

For the Temporary Skilled visa (subclass 482) which is also known as the TSS visa, the English language requirement is based on the occupation of the applicant and the salary.

For the occupation that is listed on the Short-term Skilled Occupation List (STSOL), the applicant must have a sufficient level of English which is defined as an overall band score of at least 5.0 with a score of at least 4.5 in each of the test components of the IELTS test or equivalent score in another acceptable test. For the Medium-term stream, the required results are overall band score of at least 5.0 with a score of at least 5 in each of the test components.

For other work visas categories, such as the Permanent Employer Sponsored visa (subclass 186) the English language requirement is usually an overall score of at least 6 with a minimum score of 5 for each of the 4 parts, or equivalent score in another acceptable test.

For the Post Study Work Stream of the Graduate Visa, the score required is an overall score of at least 6 with a minimum score of 5 for each of the 4 parts.

For most permanent visa categories such as the Skilled Independent visa (subclass 189) and the Skilled Regional (Provisional) visa (subclass 489), the English language requirement is based on the occupation of the applicant and the score of the English test. The applicants must have at least a “competent” level of English as defined by the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) which is a score of at least 6.0 in each of the four components (reading, writing, listening, and speaking) or equivalent score in another acceptable test.
