The Medium and Long-Term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL)

The Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL) is a list of occupations that are considered to be in high demand in the medium to long-term in Australia. This list is used to guide the selection process for permanent skilled migration visas, such as the Skilled Independent Visa (Subclass 189) and the Skilled Regional (Provisional) Visa (Subclass 489), along with the occupations that have access to direct Permanent Residency on the 186DE Visa. The MLTSSL is regularly reviewed and updated by the Australian government to reflect changes in the labour market and the economy.

LI 19/050 is a specific legislative instrument that was made under the Migration Regulations 1994 of Australia. This legislative instrument amends the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL) and the Short-term Skilled Occupation List (STSOL) and was issued by the Australian government on 19 May 2020.

This legislative instrument includes changes to the occupations that are included in the MLTSSL and STSOL, as well as changes to the criteria for assessing applications for skilled migration visas based on these lists. The changes made by LI 19/050 are intended to reflect the current and future skill needs of the economy and to align the lists with the government’s broader economic and immigration policies.

It’s important to note that the LI 19/050 is one of the many legislative instruments that the government issues to amend the MLTSSL and STSOL, and the lists are regularly reviewed and updated to reflect changes in the labour market and the economy. It’s also important to note that the MLTSSL and STSOL are used to guide the selection process for different types of skilled migration visas, with the MLTSSL being used for permanent skilled migration and the STSOL being used for temporary skilled migration.

How to be eligible for a Visa under the MLTSSL

To be eligible for a permanent skilled migration visa, an applicant must have qualifications and experience in an occupation that is listed on the MLTSSL. They must also meet other requirements, such as passing a points-based assessment, meeting English language proficiency standards, and having a valid job offer or sponsorship.

The MLTSSL is divided into several different categories, including management, professional, and trade occupations. The management category includes occupations such as CEO, managing director, and general manager. The professional category includes occupations such as doctor, engineer, and teacher. The trade category includes occupations such as electrician, plumber, and carpenter.

One of the key advantages of being on the MLTSSL for General Skilled Migration is that it allows the skilled workers to apply for a permanent visa without the need of sponsorship from an employer or a family member. It also allows the skilled workers to live and work anywhere in Australia. This is a significant benefit as it allows the skilled workers to have more flexibility and freedom in terms of their work location and career choices.
